Annika Reiss runs No. 2 indoor mile time this season at the BU John Thomas Terrier Classic

The 2026 BU John Thomas Terrier Classic produced another fast distance time this season as Annika Reiss ran the second-fastest mile time this year with 4:24.38.

BOSTON, (Jan 31) – Annika Reiss of Under Armour Dark Sky Distance produced the second-fastest mile time in the world this year, clocking 4:24.38 at the BU John Thomas Terrier Classic on Friday night at the Track and Tennis Center.

Reiss’s performance on Boston University’s renowned 200-meter banked oval came after pacer Sophia Gorriaran, who set an Ivy League record in the 1,000 meters earlier in the meet, led the field through 800 meters in 2:14 before stepping off.

The 25-year-old American, running her second mile race in this early winter season, increased the tempo to take command of the contest after the pacer departed, making a decisive move with two laps remaining as the field hit 3:21 at the 1,200-meter mark.

“I noticed we were a little slow, so I just made a bold move and kind of ran my own race in order to get that,” Reiss said, referring to securing the automatic qualifying standard for the USA Indoor Championships.

Reiss, who had been training in Boston all week after deciding to stay back following the Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White meet last week to take advantage of the fast Track & Tennis Center track despite harsh winter conditions, improved her personal best by nearly four seconds from her previous mark of 4:28.29.

“We didn’t have a treadmill, so I’ve just been going outside and running in the cold, but it’s been fun,” she said.

The race saw six women breaking the 4:30 barrier. Taryn Parks, a former Pennsylvania high school standout who ran at North Carolina and now competes for Adidas, finished second in 4:26.99. Amina Matug, formerly of Duke and Washington and now representing the Netherlands, took third in 4:27.20.

Lindsay Butler and Reiss’s teammate Angelina Ellis also featured prominently in the competitive field that unfolded on a track where the facility record of 4:17.01 was set by Heather MacLean a year ago.

Lindsey posted 4:27.30 for fourth place, followed by Helen Schlachtenhaufen at 4:28.18 and Sadie Sargent with a time of 4:28.36. Juliette Whittaker of Stanford just missed her personal best, but clocked the second-quickest short track time of her career with 4:30.97 to finish in the top 10.
