TALLAHASSEE – American distance runners delivered their strongest World Cross Country Championships performance in years on Saturday, claiming a bronze medal in the under-20 men’s competition as the United States hosted the prestigious event for the first time in more than three decades.
Competing before enthusiastic home crowds at Apalachee Regional Park under ideal conditions in Florida, Team USA recorded top-five finishes across all five team competitions.
The standout performance came from the U20 men’s squad, which matched their 2023 bronze-medal finish despite a dramatic moment when Tyler Daillak apparently lost his shoe and timing chip during the race. The 16th-place finisher helped anchor the American effort as the team held off challenges from traditional distance-running powers to secure third place with 75 points.
Kenya dominated the junior men’s race with a perfect score of 10 points, placing their top four runners ahead of all competitors, while Uganda claimed silver with 31 points.

In the senior men’s 10K, Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo completed a hat-trick of world titles, pulling away in the closing stages to win his third consecutive championship in 28:18. Parker Wolfe led the American charge in 12th place in 29:28, helping the U.S. men to a fourth-place team finish. Wesley Kiptoo, 14th (29:34) and Graham Blanks, 19th (29:41), also finished in the top 20.
The women’s senior race saw a breakthrough individual performance from Ednah Kurgat, whose 10th-place finish with 33:28 marked the best American result since Shalane Flanagan’s bronze medal in 2011. Kenya’s Agnes Ngetich clocked 31:28 and claimed individual gold by a commanding 42-second margin. Karissa Schweizer in 17th spot with a time of 33:58, also finished in the top 20, whilst Ethiopia’s depth secured the team title with 19 points. Team USA was fourth with 83 points.
The U20 women also placed fourth in the team standings, with Blair Bartlett finishing 16th individually with a time of 20:36 after a strong closing effort. In a historic result, Uganda claimed the team title, becoming the first nation outside Ethiopia or Kenya to win a World Cross Country team championship.

The mixed relay provided the day’s only disappointment for the hosts, as the American quartet finished fifth despite a brilliant opening leg from Ethan Strand. Australia captured gold in the event, with France and Ethiopia rounding out the podium.
