Maggi Congdon Claims Victory in Women’s Mile and 800m at Washington Indoor Preview

Maggie Congden won the women's mile and 800m at the Washington Indoor Preview, setting a new meet records in both events at The Dempsey facility.

SEATTLE – American runner Maggi Congdon of Swoosh TC dominated the women’s mile on the slightly oversized track at the Washington Indoor Preview on Saturday (17), winning in 4:27.77 to set a new meet record at The Dempsey indoor facility. She also doubled up in the 800m, where she broke the meeting record as well.

Congdon, who represented the United States at the World Championships in Tokyo last year in the 800 meters, where she crashed out in the semi-finals, took control of the race with two laps remaining and never looked back. The 23-year-old crossed the finish line just short of the facility record of 4:23, while completing a double-race day as she also won the 800m with a meeting record time of 2:00.93.

The former Northern Arizona University athlete benefited from pacemaker Julian Brown of Oregon State, who led the field through approximately 67-second laps for the first three circuits. Congden then surged to the front at the halfway mark, passing through the 800m in 2:15.8, before extending her advantage over the final two laps to secure the victory.

Taryn Parks held off Alexandra Carlson in the closing meters to take second place with a time of 4:29.28, with the latter crossing the finish line 4:29.67 and also breaking the 4:30.00 barrier.

The University of Washington’s Mia Cochran, an Arkansas Razorbacks transfer, delivered an impressive performance against professional competition, recording a time of 4:30.98 to claim fourth place, while fellow Husky Julia David Smith, the 5000m World University Games champion from France, also finished strongly in seventh place with 4:34.95. Sophia Kennedy of Stanford finished in the top five, clocking 4:32.13 for fifth place.

The Women’s Mile race at Washington Indoor Preview saw several late scratches, including USA’s India Weir of Hoka, who competed at the World Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida, just one week prior.

Australian 19-year-old Cameron Myers won the men’s race with the fastest indoor mile time in the world this year on any track, clocking 3:49.81 to break both the meet and facility records.
