NEW YORK (Feb 1) — Ireland’s Cian McPhillips has withdrawn from Sunday’s Millrose Games in New York due to a dental issue, Athletics Ireland said on social media. The 23‑year‑old middle‑distance runner from Longford had been scheduled to line up in the men’s 800 meters against a strong field featuring Americans Bryce Hoppel and Donavan Brazier.
McPhillips opened his 2026 season with an impressive win at last week’s New Balance Grand Prix in Boston, clocking 1:16.37 over 600 meters in his first competition since placing fourth in the 800m final at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo. A former European under-20 1500m champion, McPhillips owns an indoor personal best of 1:45.33 set in Boston in February 2025.
“Cian McPhillips (UCD AC) has unfortunately withdrawn from tonight’s Millrose Games in New York due to a dental issue,” Athletics Ireland said in a post on its official X account.
Brazier, the 2019 world 800m champion, and Hoppel, the 2024 World Indoor champion, headline the Millrose field. They will be joined by 2024 NCAA champion Shane Cohen, Spain’s Mohamed Attaoui — last year’s European silver medallist — and Egypt’s Hazem Miawad.
The Millrose Games, part of the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold series, are taking place at The Armory in Manhattan.
