WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Feb 15) – USA’s Olympic and world champion Cole Hocker clocked a North American indoor record of 3 minutes 45.94 seconds to win the mile at the ASICS Sound Invite, part of the World Athletics Indoor Tour Silver meeting, on Saturday.
Hocker’s time surpassed the 3:46.63 recorded by compatriot Yared Nuguse in New York last year, which then stood as a world short track record. The 24-year-old now sits second on the all-time indoor list behind Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who ran 3:45.14 in Liévin last year.

Cooper Teare followed home in 3:50.49, with Vincent Ciattei (Under Armour Dark Sky) clocking 3:51.70 for third. France’s Titouan Le Grix (New Balance) ran 3:51.90, and Virginia Tech’s George Couttie was fifth in 3:52.02, rounding out a fast top five.
Cooper Lutkenhaus Continues Impressive Pro Debut Season
In the 800m, 17-year-old Cooper Lutkenhaus produced another record-breaking performance, storming to a world U20 indoor mark of 1:44.03. Splitting 50.55 seconds at 400m and 1:17.55 at 600m, the American held a strong pace to close with 26.47 on the final lap.
The time lifts Lutkenhaus to sixth on the senior world all-time indoor list, topped by Josh Hoey’s world best of 1:42.50 set in Boston last month. Handal Roban of Penn State was second in 1:44.73, followed by Abraham Alvarado and Isaiah Harris of the Brooks Beasts, both clocking 1:45.62.
In the women’s 800m, Sage Hurta-Klecker dipped under two minutes for the first time indoors, winning in 1:58.78 ahead of Olivia Baker (1:59.18).
World Indoor 1500m silver medallist Nikki Hiltz (Lululemon) claimed victory in the women’s 3000m in 8:34.98, narrowly holding off compatriot Sinclaire Johnson, who clocked 8:35.48. Susan Ejore (8:37.84), Kayley DeLay (8:39.72), Shelby Houlihan (8:39.97), and Katelyn Tuohy (8:45.30) completed a deep field.
US 10,000m champion Nico Young won the men’s 3000m in 7:33.32 ahead of Yared Nuguse (7:33.78), with Ethan Strand in third at 7:35.29. Matthew Wilkinson also went under 7:36, finishing fourth in 7:35.77.
