Blacksburg (Feb 7) — Olympic champion Cole Hocker maintained his fine indoor form with a record-breaking win in the men’s 1000 metres invitational race at the Doc Hale Invitational in Blacksburg, Virginia, on Saturday.

The 24-year-old American clocked 2:16.30 seconds, setting both a personal best and facility record inside Rector Field House. His time bettered the previous mark of 2:18.05 set by Tinoda Matsatsa of Georgetown in 2024.

Hocker, who claimed Olympic gold over 1500m in Paris last year and is also the reigning 5000m world champion, led from the early stages and hit the bell lap after covering 800m in 1:49.46. He closed with a 26.85-second final 200m to seal a commanding victory over training partner Cooper Teare, who also set a lifetime best of 2:17.76.

Teare, the 2021 NCAA 5000m champion, trimmed more than a second off his previous best, while Nicholas Plant of Virginia Tech ran 2:17.80 for third, also a personal record. In total, six of the eight finishers achieved career-best marks, underlining the depth of the race.

The performance extends Hocker’s outstanding indoor campaign, following his world-leading 8:07.3 for two miles at the Millrose Games in New York last weekend. His previous 1000m best of 2:18.22 was set on the same track at last year’s Hokie Invitational.
