Maeve O’Neill smashes Irish Indoor 800m Record With 2:00.33 at Battle for Boston

Maeve O’Neill runs 2:00.33 at the Saucony Battle for Boston, breaking the Irish indoor 800m record and hitting the World Indoor qualifying standard in Boston.

Irish middle-distance runner Maeve O’Neill broke the national indoor 800 meters record with a breakthrough 2:00.33 performance at the Saucony Battle for Boston meet in Massachusetts on Sunday, underlining her emergence as one of Europe’s most promising young half‑milers.

The 21-year-old Providence College athlete, competing on the renowned Boston University track, won the second heat by a margin of about five seconds and ended the night with the third-fastest time overall across three sections. Her time sliced 0.25 seconds off the previous Irish indoor record of 2:00.58 set by Síofra Cléirigh Büttner in 2021.

O’Neill, from Cork, attacked the race from the gun, going through 400 meters in 59.09 and 600 meters in 1:29.74 before holding her form over the final lap to stop the clock at 2:00.33. The run also bettered her previous indoor personal best of 2:01.96, set in Boston last month, continuing a season of steady progression.

Her performance stands as an outright Irish under‑23 record, eclipsing Nadia Power’s outdoor mark of 2:01.01 set in 2020. It also ranks among the fastest collegiate performances ever recorded indoors, with the time listed as the ninth-quickest mark in NCAA history.

The mark meets the automatic qualifying standard for next month’s World Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland, adding a global championship option to a calendar already shaped by her collegiate commitments. It remains unclear whether O’Neill will adjust her schedule to chase a first senior global indoor appearance or prioritize the NCAA season in the coming weeks.

The Boston University facility, long regarded as one of the fastest indoor tracks in the world, again lived up to its reputation as athletes capitalized on the banked 200m oval for record and personal‑best performances across the distance program.

At the same meeting, Canadian middle-distance runner Foster Malleck set a national record in the short track 1500 meters, running 3:33.39 to lower his own previous Canadian record of 3:34.99, also achieved in Boston on January 31. Malleck, who was part of Canada’s mixed cross country relay squad at the World Championships in Tallahassee, Florida, last month, edged American Cooper Cawthra, who clocked a personal best of 3:33.85 as all of the top six finishers registered lifetime bests.

In the men’s mile, Australia’s Jack Anstey claimed victory in 3:52.48.
