EUGENE, Ore. (Feb. 4) — Defending champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden will return to Hayward Field seeking her second consecutive title in the women’s 100 meters at the 2026 Prefontaine Classic on July 4.
The Georgetown, South Carolina native headlines the premier sprint event at the two-day meet, the ninth stop on the 2026 Wanda Diamond League circuit.
Jefferson-Wooden’s 2025 Pre Classic victory in 10.75 seconds catalyzed a breakthrough season for the former Coastal Carolina standout. One month later at the same venue, she clocked 10.65 to capture the U.S. title and secure her spot on Team USA for the World Championships in Tokyo.
In Japan, Jefferson-Wooden achieved sprinting’s rare Triple Crown, sweeping the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. The three golds increased her world championship total to five, adding to relay titles from Oregon (2022) and Budapest (2023). She previously earned Olympic bronze in the 100m and relay gold at the 2024 Paris Games.
The 26-year-old currently ranks No. 1 globally in the 100m after breaking the 10.70 barrier three times in 2025. Her season peaked with a 10.61 clocking in Tokyo’s world championship final, making her the fourth-fastest woman in history and cementing her status as the event’s dominant force.
Jefferson-Woodland’s progression from 10.75 at Eugene to 10.61 in Tokyo demonstrated remarkable consistency at the sport’s highest level throughout the season.
The American sprinter has a chance to capture her first Diamond League title in 2026, potentially joining several other Olympic champions, Fraser-Pryce, Elaine Thompson-Herah, Usain Bolt, and Noah Lyles, among the elite group of 100-meter series champions.
