(Feb. 5) — Cole Hocker will step down in distance this weekend as the Olympic and world champion headlines the men’s 1000 meters invitational at the Doc Hale Invitational in Blacksburg, Virginia. The Virginia Tech meet is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, with the 1000m invite going off on the second day at 3:25 p.m. inside the Rector Field House.

Quick Return For Cole Hocker

Fresh off an entertaining victory in the Burgess Family Foundation two‑mile at the Millrose Games in New York last weekend, Hocker continues an indoor campaign that already includes a world‑leading 8:07.31 performance at The Armory. The Olympic 1500m gold medalist and reigning world 5000m champion is using the shorter distance as sharpening work as he builds toward the heart of the indoor season.

”I just felt really good,” Hocker told reporters after his Millrose Game victory.  “I knew this was such a stacked field.  It’s a regular-season meet, but being here you wouldn’t know that.”

“These are moments in my career that I’m going to one hundred percent look back on in the future, and I just want to be fully present in these moments,” he added.

Saturday’s race also marks a return to familiar territory. Hocker won the 2000m at the Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg last month, running a personal best of 4:52.92 against a strong middle‑distance field of collegiate athletes and his training partner. Runner‑up Cooper Teare, a two‑time NCAA champion, is also back in the lineup after clocking his own best of 4:54.74 in that race.

The field is loaded with Virginia Tech talent, including George Couttie, Viktor Idhammar, Ethan Coleman, Christian Jackson, Nicholas Plant, Samuel Idiens, and Dylan Decambre, along with U.S. entrant Cole Boone and Ireland’s James Gormley, a former World Youth Championships finalist.

They will all be chasing the facility 1000m record of 2:18.05, set in 2024 by Georgetown’s Tinoda Matsatsa and since improved as an NCAA mark.
