BOSTON (Feb. 3) — World Athletics has ratified three world records from 2025, including Grant Fisher’s stunning 5000-meter short track mark that rewrote the indoor history books.
Fisher, of the United States, clocked 12 minutes, 44.09 seconds at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston on Feb. 14, 2025. The time eclipsed the previous record of 12:49.60 set by Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele in Birmingham in 2004.
The double Olympic bronze medalist surged over the final laps, passing the 3000-meter mark in 7:39.16 before closing with a 59.36-second final lap. The record run came less than a week after Fisher set the world 3000-meter short track record in New York.
In other ratified marks, Kenya’s Phanuel Koech, then 18, broke the men’s under-20 1500-meter record at the Meeting de Paris on June 20, clocking 3:27.72 to surpass compatriot Ronald Kwemoi’s 2014 record of 3:28.81. The performance elevated Koech to ninth on the world all-time list.
Australia’s Isaac Beacroft, also 18, set the under-20 10,000-meter race walk record at the NSW 10,000m Walk Championships in Sydney on Dec. 11, finishing in 38:02.68. The mark bettered the previous record of 38:46.4 set by Russia’s Viktor Burayev in 2000.
All three performances are now officially recognized by World Athletics.
