Keely Hodgkinson (2:00.32) Cruises Into 800m Semis At World Indoor Championships

World record holder Keely Hodgkinson advanced to the semi-finals with a controlled 2:00.32 as Eloisa Coiro and Audrey Werro clocked the fastest qualifying times, both breaking two minutes in the morning session at the Arena Toruń.

TORUŃ, Poland (March 29) — Keely Hodgkinson served notice of her championship intentions on Friday without ever fully extending herself. The 24-year-old Briton, who set a world indoor 800m record of 1:54.87 in Liévin on Feb. 19, won Heat 1 in a comfortable 2:00.32 — the sixth-fastest time across all six heats — to book her place in Saturday’s semi-finals at the World Athletics Indoor Championships Kujawy Pomorze 26.

Unfortunately, injuries had kept Hodgkinson out of the previous three editions of the world indoors, making her appearance in Toruń all the more significant. The Olympic champion — silver in Tokyo, gold in Paris — also holds two world outdoor silver medals and a bronze, yet a global indoor title has so far eluded her. She arrives this week with the strongest seasonal credentials of any entrant and showed on Friday that she is treating the heats purely as a means to an end.

“I am glad to take the win today, it is a job well done,” Hodgkinson said after her heat. “It is all about controlling your pace. I am happy to run again tomorrow.”

Having already demonstrated her capability with a sub-1:55.00 indoors and a 1:56.33 at the British Championships earlier in the season, Hodgkinson’s sole objective on Friday was to advance with the minimum expenditure of energy. Switzerland’s Valentina Rosamilia was second in 2:01.15 in the same heat, with Croatia’s Nina Vuković third in 2:01.53.

Eloisa Coiro and Audrey Werro Set the Pace

Italy’s Eloisa Coiro posted the fastest heat time of the morning, clocking a season best of 1:59.87 to win Heat 6, with Poland’s 2025 European Indoor champion Anna Wielgosz second in 2:00.13 and Britain’s Isabelle Boffey, who has run well under two minutes this season, advancing as a fastest qualifier in 2:00.17. Swiss star Audrey Werro was not far behind, winning Heat 5 in 1:59.91 — the second-fastest time of the morning — ahead of Slovakia’s Gabriela Gajanová, the 2024 European outdoor silver medalist, who clocked 2:00.08 for second.

Norway’s Pernille Karlsen Antonsen won Heat 2 in 2:00.77, a national record, with Jamaica’s Natoya Goule-Toppin second in 2:01.32. American Addison Wiley took Heat 3 in 2:00.85 ahead of Australia’s Hayley Kitching (2:00.99). Ethiopia’s Nigist Getachew won Heat 4 in 2:02.89, with Ireland’s Maeve O’Neill second in 2:03.20. American Valery Tobias was disqualified in Heat 4 for a lane infringement.

Qualification for the semi-finals went to the first two finishers in each heat plus the six next fastest times. Spain’s Rocio Arroyo (2:01.35), New Zealand’s Alison Andrews-Paul (2:01.46), France’s Charlotte Dumas (2:01.46), France’s Clara Liberman (2:00.43) and Spain’s Lorea Ibarzabal (2:01.35) also advanced as time qualifiers.
