Results from the Mondo Classic pole vault meeting: World record for Armand “Mondo” Duplantis

Armand Duplantis sets new men’s world pole vault record at 6.31m in Uppsala, Sweden – extending his own mark by one centimetre at the Mondo Classic meet.

UPPSALA, Sweden (March 13) — The following are the complete results from the Mondo Classic, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Silver meeting, in Uppsala on Thursday (12), which saw Sweden’s Armand “Mondo” Duplantis break his own men’s pole vault world record in front of a home crowd.

On a day when the home fans were sensing something special, Duplantis delivered — extending his own world mark after clearing 6.31 meters to erase any doubts about his fitness ahead of the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland next week.

The Olympic and world champion needed only four jumps to make history again, sailing over his fifth bar of the night on the first attempt to raise his record by a centimetre. The mark improved on the 6.30m he achieved when winning the world title in Tokyo last year.

Duplantis started confidently at 5.65m, followed by clean vaults at 5.90m and 6.08m, the latter leaving Norway’s Sondre Guttormsen as his only remaining challenger. Guttormsen, the 2023 European indoor champion, cleared 6.00m on his third attempt but could go no higher after failing all three tries at 6.08m and finished second.

The 24-year-old Swede, competing in only his second outing of the year after a 6.06m performance in Clermont-Ferrand, raised the bar to 6.31m and cleared it on his first try, drawing cheers from the packed arena. According to AP Sports, only Sergey Bubka has surpassed the record more times than Duplantis, with the Ukrainian legend breaking the outdoor record 17 times and the indoor record 18 times.

Behind the leading pair, Americans Zachery Bradford and Sam Kendricks and Australia’s Kurtis Marschall each cleared 5.90m to round out the top five.

Greece’s Emmanouíl Karalís, who vaulted 6.17m earlier this season in Athens to move to second on the all-time list, managed only one clearance at 5.80m and placed seventh after missing his attempts at 6.00m.
