DES MOINES, Iowa, April 21 — Olympic medalist Yared Nuguse surged to a course record to win the men’s race while Addy Wiley claimed the women’s title at the 2026 Grand Blue Mile, which doubled as the USATF 1 Mile Road Championships on Tuesday.
The event, held on the streets of downtown Des Moines, also served as a qualifier for Team USA for the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen this September, with the top two finishers in each race securing selection.

Nuguse, the 2024 Olympic bronze medalist, edged a deep elite field to clock 3 minutes, 54.06 seconds, shaving the course record previously held by Vincent Ciattei. Ciattei stayed within striking distance throughout and finished second in 3:54.62 to also book his place on Team USA.
Andrew Hunter rounded out the podium in 3:55.29 in a tightly contested finish that saw the top five men dip under four minutes.
“The course was really fast, and it was such a fun race out here,” Nuguse said on the Drake Relays website. “I’m very happy with how I did and going to Copenhagen.”
In the women’s race, Wiley controlled the decisive stages to pull clear late and win in 4:25.42, leading a tightly packed lead group that stayed together through much of the race.
Gracie Hyde pushed the early pace and held on for second in 4:25.64, narrowly ahead of Gracie Morris, who finished third in 4:25.75. Wiley and Hyde secured the two available Team USA spots.
“It feels really good, like where I should’ve been for a long time,” Wiley said. “I’m very relieved to be performing the way I know I can and should.”
