Sydney Marathon Live Stream: Champions, course record-holder headline Major showdown

Fans in the USA can watch the Sydney Marathon live stream coverage on FloTrack at 4:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 29. Several of the world's best runners will be in action and will have an eye on the course record and PBs.

SYDNEY, Australia — The 2026 TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS and a World Athletics Platinum race, reaches a new level Sunday (Saturday EST), bringing world champions, Olympic champions, major-marathon contenders, and one highly anticipated debut to the fourth Abbott World Marathon Major of the 2026 season.

The headline is straightforward: Peres Jepchirchir versus a deep women’s field, and Alphonce Simbu versus nearly every kind of threat a marathon can offer. Defending champion Hailemaryam Kiros returns with the Sydney course record in hand, while Ethiopia’s Hagos Gebrhiwet steps up to 26.2 miles for the first time.

The elite races begin Sunday, Aug. 30, on a course that turns one of the world’s most recognizable harbor cities into a Major-stage proving ground. Marathon fans in the United States can watch the live streaming coverage on FloTrack at 4:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 29.

Men’s race: Simbu leads a crowded chase

Simbu arrives as the reigning world marathon champion and the man with the sharpest recent signal of form. The ASICS athlete ran a career-best 2 hours, 2 minutes, 47 seconds in Boston earlier this year, placing him in rare company among the fastest runners ever assembled for Sydney.

But he is not getting a clear lane to the finish.

  • Hailemaryam Kiros, the defending champion, knows how to win here. His 2:06:06 last year remains the course record, and he returns with the advantage of having already navigated Sydney’s terrain, rhythm and finish-line pressure.
  • Vincent Ngetich owns a 2:03:13 personal best and has reached the podium at three marathon majors. He has the résumé to make this a tactical race rather than simply a time trial.
  • Sisay Lemma brings big-race stature and the capacity to turn an honest pace into a demanding one.
  • Timothy Kiplagat adds another high-level contender in a field with little room for a conservative opening half.
  • Hagos Gebrhiwet is the wildcard. The Ethiopian’s marathon debut carries the usual uncertainty of a first attempt at the distance, but also the intrigue of an elite track and road racer testing whether his speed can survive the final 10 kilometers.

The central question is whether Simbu’s superior recent personal best translates into control on Sydney’s course. Kiros has proved that course familiarity matters; Ngetich has shown he can contend when the stage is largest; and Gebrhiwet could reshape the race if he remains in contention beyond 30 kilometers.

Men to watch: Simbu is the leading pick on form, but Kiros is the most credible defender and Ngetich the most proven Major-race disruptor. Gebrhiwet is the name that could make the day either historic or instructive.

Women’s race: Jepchirchir faces depth and speed

Jepchirchir, the world champion and Olympic champion, brings the marquee credentials to the women’s race. Her presence gives Sydney a front-running figure capable of managing the uncertainty that often decides championship-style marathons: changing pace, late surges and the mental strain of a final stretch in which no one can hide.
