BERLIN (World-Track) — Rebecca Schmitt led the American women at the 2026 BMW Berlin Marathon on Sunday (27), finishing 17th overall in 2 hours, 27 minutes, 38 seconds, as Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa dominated the overall contest, despite missing the world record due to late-race discomfort. USA placed 10 runners inside the top 50 during the World Athletics Platinum Label road race in Berlin.
On the American side, Schmitt lowered her previous personal best from 2:28:47, competing in her first marathon of the year. The 34-year-old had also set PBs in the road 10km and half marathon races earlier this year.
Jacqueline Gaughan was the second American and 18th overall, five seconds behind Schmitt in 2:27:43. Gaughan ran a season best. Allie Kieffer was the third American finisher and 25th overall in 2:30:41, followed by Savannah Berry, fourth among Americans and 28th overall in 2:31:31. Katja Goldring was fifth among Americans and 29th overall in 2:31:55. Rachel McCardell placed sixth among Americans and 32nd overall in 2:35:57.
Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa won the women’s race in 2:11:04, a course record, and improved the third-fastest women’s marathon time in history. She was on pace to challenge the 2:09:56 world record at 40 kilometers before slowing sharply in the closing stretch.
The race was ideal for the Americans seeking qualifying times to start their 2028 Olympic Marathon journey, with eight women dipping under the 2028 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials qualifying standard of 2:37:00. Kaitlyn Bonnet, with 2:37:24, just missed the standard. It is well noted that some of the women on the list had already met the standard from previous races, but it was a pleasing day to continue preparations.
