Hobbs Kessler and Presley Weems both secured impressive wins at the Ryan Shay Memorial Mile 2023 in downtown Charlevoix in Michigan on Saturday, 22 July. Despite missing the respective course records, both winners powered to convincing wins in the Elite races.
In the men’s race, Kessler, who grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and still lives and trains there, delighted the home fans after he surged away from the field to clock a season-best time of 3:57.4, earning USD $2000 in prize money, plus an additional USD $250.

On Saturday, Matt Cooper clocked a time of 4:00 for second place and secured USD $1500 behind Kessler, with Nathan Mylenek further back in third place in a time of 4:04. He collected USD $1000.
Meanwhile, the women’s Ryan Shay Memorial Mile 2023 title went to Presley Weems of the Atlanta TC Elite –posting 4:28 for the victory and earning prize money of USD $2000.
Finishing second on the weekend was Gina Mcnamara, who ran 4:29, with third place going to Esther Gitahi, who posted a time of 4:33.
Course Records: Canada’s Ben Flanagan (3:53.89) set the men’s course record in 2022, while the women’s course record of 4:20.81 was set by USA’s Shannon Osika in 2018.
