Chase Jackson launched herself into the history books at the Iron Wood Classic in Rathdrum, Idaho, breaking her own US shot put record with a massive 20.95 meter throw on Saturday, June 28.
The two-time world champion needed just one attempt to rewrite the record books. Her opening round heave sailed 19 centimeters beyond her previous national mark, instantly becoming the furthest shot put throw worldwide since August 2013, according to World Athletics data.
Jackson managed only one other legal throw during the competition, but that effort also cleared the 20-meter barrier at 20.45m in the fourth round. The 30-year-old athlete now sits just one centimeter away from the North American record of 20.96m, established by Cuba’s Belsy Laza over three decades ago.
USA’s Maggie Ewen finished second behind Jackson with 19.69m, narrowly beating Jaida Ross (19.62m) for the runner-up position.
The men’s shot put competition saw world and Olympic finalist Payton Otterdahl claim victory with a season-best mark of 22.09m. Otterdahl dominated the field, with Roger Steen finishing second at 21.68m.
Nick Ponzio from Italy rounded out the top three with a season-best 21.04m, while American Daniel McArthur achieved a personal best of 20.54m in fourth place.
Meanwhile, DeAnna Price reminded everyone why she earned the 2019 world championship title, crushing the women’s hammer throw field with a winning distance of 76.82m. The American’s performance created a three-meter gap between herself and runner-up Annette Echikunwoke, who threw 73.31m for second place.
World champion Laulauga Tausaga delivered one of her career’s finest performances in the discus competition. Her winning throw of 66.59m edged out Gabi Jacobs (65.66m) and Veronica Fraley (64.64m) in what proved to be a highly competitive event.
Jackson’s achievement adds another milestone to her impressive career resume, which includes two world championship titles in 2022 and 2023, plus multiple indoor medals. Her latest throw moves her to 35th on the all-time world rankings.
