Top-ranked Oklahoma State won the men’s team title at the 2025 NCAA D1 Cross Country Championships, while Habtom Samuel of New Mexico sprinted away from his rivals with less than a kilometer remaining to seal the individual 10K title at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia, MO, on Saturday, November 22.
Oklahoma State comfortably won the men’s team crown with 57 points, after placing all five scorers inside the top 35, including three inside the top six and four inside the top 12. The team title was the fifth under Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Dave Smith.
“I’m just so proud of this family, this group of guys,” Smith said. “Last year was a low point for us. They didn’t start pointing fingers… I screwed up and I told them that and they were cool with it.
They said “tell us what to do differently this year and we’ll do it.” Just so proud of them and the confidence they put in our program and each other… They got back to work and put last year behind us and here we are.”

New Mexico, behind Samuel’s first-place finish, took a surprising runner-up podium spot behind Oklahoma State with 82 points, while Iowa State was third with 158 points. Syracuse with 212 points and Oregon with 239 points completed the top five finishers in the team standings.
Meanwhile, Habtom Samuel sealed the victory in the individual 10K race, posting a time of 28:33 to top his rivals. After pacing well with a large pack for the majority of the contest, the New Mexico junior standout took control with a decisive burst of speed at the 9K mark to secure the win.
Rocky Hansen (Wake Forest) was second with a time of 28:38, followed by Solomon Kipchoge (Washington State), 28:40; Brian Musau (Oklahoma State), 28:41; Fouad Messaoudi (Oklahoma State), 28:42; and Denis Kipngetich (Oklahoma State), 28:44.
