Sinclaire Johnson Shatters American Record at 2025 Kalakaua Merrie Mile Results

The 2025 Kalakaua Merrie Mile in Honolulu delivered a record-breaking performance on Saturday, December 13, as Sinclaire Johnson demolished the American record in the road mile. The following are the complete results separated by the elite men’s and women’s races at the 2025 Kalakaua Merrie Mile.

Johnson crossed the finish line in 4:21.66, breaking Krissy Gear’s previous U.S. record of 4:23.98 from April at the Grand Blue Mile in Des Moines. Her time now ranks second on the world all-time list, trailing only Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji, who set the world record of 4:20.98 in 2023. Johnson’s performance also stands as the fastest road mile ever run on U.S. soil.

The race featured a distinctive format where elite women received a 31-second head start over the men. Prize money was determined by the overall finishing order across both fields. For the second consecutive year, a woman claimed the overall victory.

Johnson ran without serious pressure through the final stages of the race. “I knew she was going to produce something special once she approached the final stages of the race and was still running very strong,” shared a passionate spectator who was cheering on the American as she entered the finishing line.

Nikki Hiltz, last year’s overall champion, finished second among the women in 4:24.81. Kenya’s Susan Ejore-Sanders took third place in the women’s race with a time of 4:26.69.

Josh Hoey led the men’s field with a winning time of 3:55.15. Hobbs Kessler placed second among the men, clocking 3:56.65.

Yared Nuguse, who won bronze at the Olympics and captured the overall Merrie Mile title in 2022, finished third in the men’s race with 3:57.52. Kenya’s Festus Lagat recorded 3:58.10 for fourth place among the men, while New Zealand’s Geordie Beamish, the 2025 world champion in the steeplechase, rounded out the top five with 3:58.45.
