EUGENE, Oregon, (June 22) – Grant Fisher became the first track and field athlete to secure a spot on the U.S. Olympic team for Paris 2024, dominating the men’s 10,000 meters final at the U.S. Olympic Trials on Friday night at Hayward Field.
Fisher, the race favorite, broke away from a pack of four runners with just over two laps remaining, powering home to victory in 27:49.47. He finished well clear of second-place William Kincaid, the defending champion, who clocked 27:50.74.
Nico Young of Northern Arizona rounded out the podium, capturing third place and booking his ticket to Paris with a time of 27:52.40.

While the top finishers’ times were well below the Olympic qualifying standard of 27:00, all three podium finishers had already met the mark earlier this season, securing their spots on Team USA.
Andrew Hunter finished fourth in 27:53.35, narrowly missing out on an Olympic berth, while Casey Clinger and Conner Mantz rounded out the top six.
Notable finishes further down the field included Paul Chelimo, the 2016 Olympic silver medalist in the 5,000 meters, who placed 10th in 28:18.31.
The men’s 10,000 meters final was the lone track final on the opening day of the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials, which continue through June 30.
With his victory, Fisher sets himself up as a medal contender for Paris, where he’ll face a tough international field led by world record holder Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda, plus the challengers from Kenya and Ethiopia.
The U.S. Olympic Trials continue on Saturday with finals in several field events and preliminary rounds on the track.
