Elisha Barno of Kenya and Volha Mazuronak of Belarus delivered standout performances at the 48th Grandma’s Marathon 2024 in Duluth, Minnesota, on a cool, windy, and wet Saturday morning (22).

“I am surprised and very proud to win again. I’ll never forget this in my life,” said Barno, who is married and has three daughters. “This is my favorite race. When I come here, I think I’m going to do well. I think I’m going to win.”

“I am surprised and very proud to win again,” said Barno, who broke away from two runners over the closing miles to seal his second successive win.  “I’ll never forget this in my life.

In the women’s race, Mazuronak, making her Grandma’s Marathon debut, set a new course record with a time of 2:23:52. The 35-year-old two-time Olympian, who ran sole for most of the race, expressed her joy at the unexpected victory.

“My Olympics was here,” said Mazuronak, who finished fifth in both the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Games. “A friend told me about this race and said the course was beautiful with scenery.

“My goal was to run for a good time, not for place, and, to be honest, this [performance] was a surprise because my preparation hadn’t been the best.”
