The Boston Marathon 2025, part of the World Athletics Platinum Label road races, is set for Monday, April 21. Defending champions Hellen Obiri and Sisay Lemma will lead a competitive field featuring elite marathoners, according the race organizers. Elite runners are scheduled to race cross Middlesex County, Norfolk County, and Suffolk County.

Hellen Obiri Chasing A Rare Feat

Hellen Obiri, a three-time world champion across various disciplines, aims to make history with a third consecutive Boston Marathon win. The last woman to achieve this was Fatuma Roba in 1999.

“Defending a win is never easy,” said Obiri, who has won the marathon for the past two years.

Her main competitors include world champion Amane Beriso and 2023 runner-up Yalemzerf Yehualaw, both of whom have personal bests (PBs) under 2:20.

In addition to Obiri, the women’s field features notable Kenyans, including two-time Boston champion Edna Kiplagat and Sharon Lokedi, the 2022 New York Marathon winner. U.S. entrants include former North American record-holder Keira D’Amato and 2018 Boston winner Desiree Linden, rounding out a strong American presence in the race.

Sisay Lemma Expects Challenges In Title Defense

On the men’s side, Sisay Lemma aims to defend his title. His PB of 2:01:48, which ranks him as the fourth-fastest marathon runner ever, puts him in a strong position.

“Winning again will be an even bigger challenge,” Lemma remarked, reflecting on his missed opportunities due to injury.

The men’s elite field also includes Evans Chebet, a two-time winner returning after a third-place finish last year, and Chicago Marathon champion John Korir, who boasts a PB of 2:02:44.

Meanwhile, other notable athletes include former Berlin Marathon podium finishers Cybrian Kotut and Haymanot Alew, along with world champion Victor Kiplangat, who seeks to make history as the first Ugandan winner in Boston.
