TOKYO, Japan (March 5, 2023) —— Ethiopian runners swept the podium in the men’s race at the 2023 Tokyo Marathon on Sunday, with Deso Gelmisa taking the top spot with a time of 2:05:22. In the women’s race, Kenya’s Rosemary Wanjiru claimed victory with a personal best time of 2:16:28.
Gelmisa, competing in his first Tokyo Marathon, narrowly beat out his fellow Ethiopian Esa Mohamed, who also finished with a time of 2:05:22, while Tsegaye Kebede secured the bronze medal with a time of 2:05:25.
The Ethiopian trio’s impressive performance demonstrated the strength and depth of African distance running.
Kenya’s Wanjiru put in a dominant display to win the women’s race, with Tsehay Gemechu of Ethiopia finishing in second place with a personal best time of 2:16:56.
Ethiopia’s Ashete Bekere, the 2019 Berlin Marathon champion, claimed the bronze medal with a time of 2:19:11. Mizuki Matsuda was the top Japanese finisher in the women’s race, crossing the finish line in sixth place with a time of 2:21:44.
In the men’s race, Titus Kipruto was the first Kenyan to cross the finish line with a time of 2:05:32 for fourth spot, while Ichitaka Yamashita was the first Japanese runner to finish the race in seventh place with a time of 2:05:51.
The 2023 Tokyo Marathon is part of the 2023 World Athletics Label Road Races – Platinum series, attracting top runners from around the world to compete in one of the most prestigious marathons on the planet.
