Kenyan and world distance star Faith Kipyegon narrowly missed breaking the 1,000-meter world record again at the Wanda Diamond League Xiamen 2025 on Saturday but pocketed some money for her efforts after setting marks in two other categories.
Kipyegon, who has broken four world records in the past two Wanda Diamond League seasons, powered away from her rivals to clock a time of 2:29.21 in Xiamen. The performance was just 0.23 seconds short of the fastest women’s time ever clocked over a kilometer.
It’s also the third-fastest time in history behind Kipyegon’s personal best of 2:29.15 and the long-standing world record of 2:28.98, held by Svetlana Masterkova of Russia since 1996.
For her efforts at the Wanda Diamond League Xiamen 2025, which included a meeting record and world-leading time, Faith Kipyegon collected USD $10,000.
After going through the opening 800 meters at 1:59.69, the 31-year-old three-time Olympic 1,500-meter champion dominated the remainder of the event to seal the victory.
“It was a very good start to my season,” said a delighted Kipyegon. “I’m happy to start my season, and I hope to stay healthy this way and for the next races.”
Australia’s Abby Caldwell was second to Kipyegon in an Oceanian record of 2:32.94 and earned $6,000, with third place going to another Australian, Sarah Billings, in a personal best time of 2:33.45, taking home $4,000.
American Sage Hurta-Klecker also found her best-ever form over the distance, clocking a new personal best of 2:33.45 and earning $3,000.
Kipyegon’s time today comfortably bettered the previous 2025 world-leading mark of 2:34.50 by Australia’s Georgia Griffith.
