Mykolas Alekna of Lithuania made history Sunday by becoming the first athlete ever to throw a discus beyond 75 meters.
The 22-year-old achieved the remarkable feat at the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meeting in Ramona, Oklahoma, throwing an incredible 75.56 meters. This smashed his own previous world record by more than a meter.
Alekna was on fire from the start. He opened the competition with a throw of 74.89 meters—already breaking his old record—before launching his historic 75.56-meter throw in the fourth round.

This Oklahoma facility has become something of a lucky charm for Alekna. It’s the same venue where he set his previous world record of 74.35 meters last year. The location is popular among top discus throwers because of its helpful wind conditions.
Australia’s Matt Denny also had an exceptional performance at the event, throwing 74.78 meters—which would have been a world record itself if not for Alekna’s amazing throws. USA’s Sam Mattis, threw 71.27m to finish third, while Germany’s Clemens Prufer tossed 71.01m to finish fourth.
Alekna, who won silver at the 2024 Olympics, continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in discus throwing at a remarkably young age.
