BYU's Meghan Hunter sets Big 12 Outdoor Championships record

BYU's Meghan Hunter achieved a significant milestone here at the 2025 Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Lawrence, Kansas, on Saturday (May 17). The senior runner won the 800-meter race in an impressive time of 1:58.99, despite having to run the last 200m solo. This performance established a new meeting record for the event.

Hunter's time of 1:58.99 places her among the fastest women in NCAA Division I history over 800 meters. Only Athing Mu of Texas A&M and Michaela Rose of LSU have recorded faster times. Mu's record is 1:57.73, set in 2021, and Rose ran 1:58.12 earlier in May 2025.

Meghan Hunter Dominate At 2025 Big 12 Outdoor Championships

During her record-breaking run this weekend, Hunter completed the first 400 meters in 58.80 seconds. She then finished the final lap in 1:00.20. Her victory surpassed the previous meeting record of 2:00.42, which was set by Gabija Galvydyte of Oklahoma State in 2024.

Fanny Arendt from Texas Tech finished second in the race with a time of 2:00.91. Emmaculate Jemutai of Kansas took third place, clocking in at 2:01.83. Hunter's achievement was one of seven meeting records broken at the 2025 Big 12 Outdoor Championships at the time of this report.

Shortly after Hunter's record-breaking run, Baylor's top 400-meter hurdler Nathaniel Ezekiel also broke his own meeting record for the second time in days with an impressive run. Ezekiel finished with a time of 47.89 seconds, improving on his previous record of 47.90 seconds from the semi-finals.

Oskar Edlund of Texas Tech finished second in that event with a time of 49.00, and Jayden Douglas of TCU placed third in 49.87.
