Before the event, Qatari track star Mutaz Barshim talked about the importance of supporting athletes. He mentioned the $5000 bonus for athletes who break meeting records in Doha.

Barshim, the Tokyo 2021 Olympic champion and three-time world champion (2017, 2019 and 2022) believes it’s important to help athletes financially because track and field can be a tough career.

“Track and field isn’t an easy job,” he said, “It’s tough out there and when it comes to the financial part of the sport you can be fourth or fifth in the world and you might still need a job (when you retire). Change is good and we’re moving in the right direction.”

Barshim has won multiple Olympic medals and is aiming for another medal at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo before the Asian Games in 2026.
