BUDAPEST (August 19) — The men’s 100m heats at the 2023 World Athletics Championships are shaping up to be a thrilling spectacle, with top sprinters from around the globe set look to advance to the next round of the competition in Saturday’s evening session.

Zharnel Hughes Starts World 100m Title Hunt

Leading the pack in heat one is Great Britain’s world-leader, Zharnel Hughes. Entering the championships with the season’s fastest time of 9.83 seconds, the European silver medalist is keen on translating his early momentum into championship glory, as he eyes his maiden world title.

Challenging Hughes are formidable competitors like Jamaica’s Ryiem Forde, who owns a personal best of 9.96 seconds this season from the Jamaica National Track and Field Championships , and Arthur Cisse of the Ivory Coast, another sprinter who’s dipped below the 10-second mark.

Defending champion Fred Kerley, who clinched the title in Oregon in 2022, embarks on his title defense from the fifth heat. He’ll face stiff competition early from Jamaica’s Oblique Seville, who narrowly missed the podium last summer and is determined to clinch a medal this time around.

Nigeria’s Favour Ashe and Brazil’s Paulo André Camilo will also be vying for places into the next round from this heat.

Noah Lyles Says He Will Run 9.65, His Dream Begins Here

Two-time world 200m champion Noah Lyles is set to commence his sprint double quest from heat two, squaring off against Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala. The American made headlines recently by predicting that he will run 9.65 seconds for the 100m and break the 200m world record of Usain Bolt so fans are early awaiting his first race here in Budapest.

Meanwhile, U.S. champion Cravont Charleston will be pitted against Great Britain’s Eugene Amo-Dadzie and Liberia’s Emmanuel Matadi in the third heat.
