EUGENE, Ore. – Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet smashed the women’s 10,000 meters world record with a time of 28:54.14 at the 2024 Prefontaine Classic – Wanda Diamond League meeting at Hayward Field on Saturday.
Chebet, the world leader at 5,000m this season and two-time world cross-country champion, broke away from Ethiopia’s world champion Gudaf Tsegay with three laps to go and the 24-year-old never looked back, pulling away from her rivals to break the previous world record of 29:01.03, set in 2021 by Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey.
“I am so happy,” a delighted Chebet, whose previous 10,000m best was 33:29.7h in 2020, said in her post-race interview on Saturday.

Behind her at the 2024 Prefontaine Classic were three personal bests, including 5,000m world record holder Tsegay, who finished second with a PB of 29:05.92.
Kenya’s Lilian Kasait Rengeruk clocked a personal best of 29:26.89 for third place, while compatriot Margaret Kipkemboi finished fourth in a PB of 29:27.59.
In total, nine women ran faster than 30 minutes today.
