The boys’ 5K race at the 2025 Brooks XC National Championships delivered a dramatic finish on Saturday, December 13, at Balboa Park in San Diego, California. Jackson Spencer from the West region narrowly defeated Marcelo Mantecon of the South by just 0.2 seconds in a sprint to the line.

Marcelo Mantecon controlled the pace for much of the race. He led the field through the two-mile mark in 9:53.8. Jackson Spencer ran in the chase pack during the early stages, staying about three seconds behind Mantecon at that checkpoint. In fact, he ran conservatively in the opening mile and a half, opting to stay off the early pace before joining the lead pack at the halfway point of the race.
Spencer picked up his pace and caught the leader with less than a mile remaining. He appeared to have secured a comfortable victory as he approached the finishing stretch.
Mantecon responded with a strong closing kick. The South region runner cut down Spencer’s advantage and pulled close to even in the final meters before the two athletes raced side by side toward the tape in a head-to-head battle.
However, Spencer held his position to win the race with Mantecon finishing second in 15:10.9 after leading most of the competition. The race followed an exciting girls’ event earlier in the day, which saw Natasza Dudek, an Ann Arbor Pioneer High School sophomore who crossed the finish line in 16:55.5.
Caden Leonard took third place for the South region with a time of 15:18.4. Yohanes Van Meerten of the West finished fourth in 15:21.2. Sean Fries from the Midwest rounded out the top five in 15:21.6.
