There was a major upset at the Jamaica High School National Championships on Saturday.

The shock came in the boys’ class II 200-metres dash, as overwhelming race favourite Jazeel Murphy was beaten into third place.

Murphy, one of the country’s brightest young stars, was seen as the one to beat in the build up to the championships and he looked the part when running 21.19seconds, the fastest of the semi-final races.

However, on Saturday the 16-year-old was relegated to third by Odean Skeen, who won in 21.40 and Delano Williams, who clocked 21.47.

Murphy ended third in 21.48secs.

He did not compete in the 100m dash, another race he was highly fancied to win.

  1. I HEARD HE IS NURSING A HAMSTRING INJURY. HE WAS EXCUSED FROM THE CARIFTA TRIALS BECAUSE OF THE SAME. I PRAY HE GETS HEALTHY SOON.

  2. Yes Cvivenne, he will be fine…he,s young so he will heal fast…. but what these coaches need to do is…stop from entering athletes that are injured, to participate in any type of meets….they are young….they will have many more chances to show there colors….so if they are injured, don,t run them… because if you run them….you will only be making things {the injury} worse…and that can turned out to be life long.

  3. Murphy is injured. He jogged the curve then ran the straight. When he caught the 2 front runners easily, he stopped and held his leg.
    He got treatment immediately after.
Totally agreed that he shouldn’t have run. He’s a fantastic talent.
p.s Look out for Rattray (under 14) in the 100m

  4. I hope Jazeel gets well and back on track soon. I agree with you Tony roots. its more important to allow injuries to heal well rather than take chances and risk further, more serious injury.

  5. The coach must have known that his charge was not healed completely from his hamstring problems. Why let him compete? One has to look at the larger picture which is the future of these kids who has such great potential to really make it into the professional league not to over work them by entering them into all the scrappy meet on the island long before the championship rolls around.

Some of the meets that i heard he took part in he could have done without them. Why kill yu donkey, wen yu know de wut a him foot? Just don’t make much sense to me. I hope he doesn’t sink too low from this loss and will bounce back roaring again! God speed Jazheel my prayers with you.

  6. Hopeton, i agree look out for Kevaughn Rattray 10.90 very serious time for 14yrs old in the 100m. These are plain raw talents that needs nurturing and guidance.

  7. its a pity abt the gazelle but they need 2 rest him so he can heal oh did any1 see our felloe blogger cummings congrats 2 him but if him didn do the long jump him would win the 100m easily the long jump is hard on ones legs & so many rounds at that

  8. Yea Minnie, thanks for reminding me….big up the little star Adam Cummings….who did quite well at champs and i,m sure he,s aiming to do even better next year…. nuff nuff love from your blogging family.
