The top results from the 2023 Lilac Bloomsday Run in Spokane, Washington, on Sunday (7). Ethiopians Jemal Yimer and Yeshi Kalayu won the men’s and women’s 12km races on the day with a pair of solid runs against two strong fields.
On the men’s side, Yimer clocked 33:58 to take the victory ahead of USA’s Teshome Mekonen, who came home in second place at 34:18, with third place going to Mogos Teumay Abhra of South Africa in a time of 34:30. Kenyan runners, David Bett (34:43) and Raymond Magut (34:50) rounded out the top five finishers today.
Yimer, who pulled away from Mekonen with about 4 kilometers left the race, was securing his second victory at the Bloomsday Run after finishing first in 2018. He did, however, miss the men’s course record of 33:51, set by Kenya’s Micah Kogo in 2008.
The women’s contest, meanwhile, went to Yeshi Kalayu of Ethiopia, but she was heavily followed by a host of American runners who rounded out the top 15 finishers. Read more: 2023 Prague Marathon Results; Mutiso, Edesa Claim Victory
Kalayu broke the tape at 38:49 for first place and was followed home by Cynthia Limo (USA) 38:51, Daisy Kimeli (USA) 39:27, Keira D’Amato (USA) 39:42, and Weynshet Waldeksadik (USA) 40:43 in the top five.
